Vision: The Center for Natural and Traditional Knowledge
Imagine walking into a mountain sanctuary, with beautiful forest and farmland, pastures and hills just one hour from New York City…There are nature trails through the grounds up along into a national parkland where students and groups come to learn about sustainable practices.
Fields of biodynamic vegetables, orchards and livestock offer a view of domesticated production, and are paired with computerized kiosks that offer visuals and information that lead the students to touch, taste and smell the actual plants that they are learning about.
A Center of environmental education, conservation and ecosystem welfare welcomes teachers, students and parents. Hikes through the forest provide direct contact with natural systems and wildlife. Instructors teach and help students ‘read the forest’ as they are introduced to scientific, natural and traditional teachings of sustainability.
Discussions surrounding resource use, traditional knowledge and modern technology are presented to students, as they are encouraged to take on stewardship roles of the earth and explore sustainable living.
Meditation, kung fu and yoga offer traditional knowledge in physical fitness and healing practitioners are also available to teach healthy living practices.
