Template Farming
The purpose of our project is to teach simple farming techniques to the community, and to use the garden for health and healing. We'll use traditional techniques, with companion planting to make farming low maintenance, keep the soil rich and to provide highly nutritous food in a fun way.
Template Farming means we collect data around the project so we can let people know, in a simple way, what it would take for them to reproduce the project in their community. So, costs and materials for garden construction, orientation of garden, hours of labor, seeds and plants used, watering, the yields and times of yields, and more, will be available as a Template.
It also means a beautiful garden thats enjoyable for children and adults, where we can learn about simple ways to improve the quality of life.
This year a small community farming program has begun at Doc Fry Community Center in Warwick, NY, as well as at the Hill Hold Museum!
Some features of the Template garden are:
- Companion planting with flowers, trees, berries
- Edible Landscaping with leafy greens and other plants
- Efficiency Farming - Three Sisters
- Forest Gardening and Mycorrhizal plots
- Seed Saving techniques for education
- Medicinal Plants/ Culinary Herbs
- Green Jobs through Sustainable Practice
Our long term goal is to begin to restore the variety and quality of foods that humans once enjoyed in this region. For more information about that subject, follow this link - http://www.vimeo.com/1184619
